To kick off this year’s 3 day conference we’ll be building connections with other QA professionals by gathering to discuss topics important to each of us. 
In this QA workshop we will embrace this year’s emphasis on post-mortem style presentations and be sharing our greatest nightmares, lessons and successes with each other. 
This will be a time for honesty, self-assessment and likely some amusement. In small groups, be prepared to discuss topics including:
  • The biggest challenge facing your QA team
  • What you learnt the hard way
  • What I wish I knew on day 1 of being a QA Lead/Manager
  • Successes of the last 12 months, and what led to it
About your leader:
Alexander is in his 13th year in games development, having worked on over 100 titles in his career. In that time he has seen QA evolve from a fringe role, often misunderstood, to one imperative to a games’ success. 
Alexander has also performed emergency CPR, been swept out into the Atlantic alone and found a love for whiskey.

Who’s it for? Anyone interested in discussing the routines, culture or practices of their teams
Prerequisite Knowledge: None needed – come one come all!
What Should I Bring? A desire to improve, discuss and an open mind! It helps if you have a topic that you have been thinking about and would like to discuss with others.
What do I need to prepare? We will be asking attendees to submit topic ideas in advance – this is optional and we have prepared some topic suggestions below but if you wish to focus on anything in particular, the power is in your hands!

An open space format is an organised way of having productive group discussions on the subjects that YOU find interesting or mission-critical right now, while simultaneously being able to share your own knowledge and experience with others in your position. The emphasis here is on discussion, instead of listening to eyes-forward presentations.
 
Participants will be split into small groups, and at the beginning of the workshop we will write all the topics that will be discussed during the session on the board. We will then select our first couple of topics from the list, and get discussing in our groups. You can either stick to one topic, or change groups whenever you want if you’d prefer to discuss a different topic.
 
Topic Suggestions may include:
 
·         How important is cultural fit and how to sustain a great culture eg. Team building?
·         What kind deliverables can be expected from the
QA team?
·         Training high quality QA
·         QA standards
·         Best practices about time estimates.
·         Advantages and disadvantages of test case
driven testing.
·         How to sell the impact of high value minor issues to colleagues?
·         Automated testing of games
·         What software do you use and like?
 
The ‘Rules’:

·         Whenever it starts is the right time
·         When it’s over, it’s over

About Your Leaders:
Artur Foxander has been in the gaming industry for 11 years, starting as a QA tester for AAA titles, and indie titles both for development studios and Publishing.
He is currently leading the Publishing QA team at Paradox Interactive

We do believe in the importance of localisation, and we do believe in the value we add to our games. How can we inspire the rest of our studio or publisher to share this belief?
 
Questions to explore:
·         How is the localisation department and activity currently seen by other departments within our organisations? And how should it be seen?
·         What can we learn from marketing, customer service and sales techniques to improve our “image”?
·         How can we adapt their toolset to improve collaboration, visibility and attitudes towards localisation within our studio or publisher?
 
 
About your Leader:
Tamara Tirjak is the Senior Localisation Manager of Frontier Developments, a self-publishing video game developer based in Cambridge, UK. She is responsible for coordinating all localisation-related activities across the organisation, focusing on streamlining translation efforts and supporting the company’s international presence.
Tamara’s previous experience includes working as an in-house linguist, project manager, translation tool support engineer and technical trainer for various leading language service providers.”

  • What does it truly mean?
  • What do you need for short and long-term community development strategies?
  • What do you get as a company from developing a community?
  • When should you have those discussions and who should be involved?
 
How to maximize and measure ROI of community activities.
 
  • Measuring success and return of community activities is something that isn’t done often enough in our business, but they are ways to do it. Thus, we should raise the following questions during the workshop:
  • What’s the obvious KPI we can use to measure success of community activities?
  • How can you go above & beyond the obvious to measure ROI of community activities?
  • How to include retention and acquisition aspects in some of your community activities?

Nicolas Nottin has been working in the game industry for 8 years, assisting players in major online games at Square Enix Europe, developing strong community plans for the Total War franchise at Creative Assembly and now providing superior player services as Senior Community Development Specialist at flaregames GmbH.
